My Japanese Food Adventures – Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pancake)

At our favorite Izakaya in Asakusa we also sampled their delicious and intriguing Okonomiyaki or as I’ve come to know it,  A Japanese Pancake.

I first tasted this style of pancake at my schools cafeteria. I had absolutely no clue what this weird looking pancake thing was covered in mayo and some kind of dried flakey things. It was odd to say the least but it tasted amazing. I couldn’t ever pin point what all the ingredients were inside so now finally in Japan I could taste the real deal and see exactly what I’ve been eating for the last 2 years.

Well this pancake was a thousand times more different than the one at school. It was massive and filled with so many things I actually had to start pulling it apart with my chopstix to see inside. Cabbage, pork, squid, corn, spring onions; battered and fried then covered in what tasted like a very sweet but thick soy sauce, mayonnaise and topped with dried fish flakes (bonito flakes). It was unbelievably delicious. It was a perfect balance between sweet and sour and  crunchy and soft all the while paired with a nice ice cold beer for a quick satisfying lunch.
